Ebookers operate local online travel agencies across 14 countries in Europe and its headquarters are in central London. It formerly operated high street travel agencies in Dublin, Ireland but closed this in 2006 to go internet only.
Ebookers.com was established in 1998, by Dinesh Dhamija, but its company’s origins go back almost 20 years. Formally known as Flightbookers Ltd this London based travel agency was founded in 1983 in Earls Court, London. Flightbookers developed into one of the UK’s biggest travel agencies and in 1996, established a website and was the first travel agency to launch and interactive travel website in the UK. The website was so successful that in 1999 the internet arm was separated to form ebookers.com and the new company was taken public with a flotation on Nasdag in New York and in Germany’s Neuer Markt. This flotation raised $61m and was used to spread Ebookers across Europe. In November 2000 Ebookers bought Flightbookers for $15 this reuniting the two companies.
Ebookers.com is a wholly owned subsidiary of Travelport, the former travel arm of Cendant which was bought in October 2006 by an affiliate of Blackstone Partners. Travelport split out itself into three companies.
